Isaiah 51:4-14

4 "1Pay attention to Me, O My people, And give ear to Me, O My nation; For a 2law will go forth from Me, And I will set My 3justice for a 4light of the peoples.
5 "My 5righteousness is near, My salvation has gone forth, And My 6arms will judge the peoples; The 7coastlands will wait for Me, And for My 8arm they will wait expectantly.
6 "9Lift up your eyes to the sky, Then look to the earth beneath *; For the 10sky will vanish like smoke, And the 11earth will wear out like a garment And its inhabitants will die in like manner; But My 12salvation will be forever, And My righteousness will not wane.
7 "13Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, A people in whose 14heart is My law; Do not fear the 15reproach of man, Nor be dismayed at their revilings.
8 "For the 16moth will eat them like a garment, And the 17grub will eat them like wool. But My 18righteousness will be forever, And My salvation to all generations."
9 19Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; Awake as in the 20days of old, the generations of long ago. 21Was it not You who cut Rahab in pieces, Who pierced the 22dragon?
10 Was it not You who 23dried up the sea, The waters of the great deep; Who made the depths of the sea a pathway For the 24redeemed to cross over?
11 So the 25ransomed of the LORD will return And come with joyful shouting to Zion, And 26everlasting joy will be on their heads. They will obtain gladness and joy, And 27sorrow and sighing will flee away.
12 "I, even I, am He who 28comforts you. Who are you that you are afraid of 29man who dies And of the son of man who is made 30like grass,
13 That you have 31forgotten the LORD your Maker, Who 32stretched out the heavens And laid the foundations of the earth, That you 33fear continually all day long because * of the fury of the oppressor, As he makes ready to destroy? But where is the fury of the 34oppressor?
14 "The 35exile will soon be set free, and will not die in the dungeon, 36nor will his bread be lacking.

Isaiah 51:4-14 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO ISAIAH 51

This chapter gives the church and people of God reason to expect comfortable times and certain salvation, though they had many enemies. They are directed to look to Abraham and Sarah, signified by the rock and hole of the pit, and observe how he was called alone, blessed and increased; which should be improved as an argument to strengthen their faith, that God could and would bless and increase his church, though in a low estate, and bring it into a flourishing one, Isa 51:1-3. They are assured of the publication of the Gospel, expressed by the law, doctrine, and judgment of the Lord; by which means the righteousness and salvation of Christ should be brought nigh to them, as the object of their trust and confidence, Isa 51:4,5, and also of the perpetuity of his righteousness and salvation, when the heavens, and the earth, and the inhabitants of it, should decay, even their revilers and persecutors, and therefore they need not fear their reproaches and revilings, Isa 51:6-8, upon which follows a prayer of faith, that the Lord would exert his power as in former times, when he destroyed the Egyptians, and dried up the Red sea for Israel to pass through, the ransomed of the Lord; from whence it might be concluded, that the redeemed of the Lord would be brought into a very comfortable condition again, Isa 51:9-11 wherefore they had no reason to be afraid of men, since the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth, would deliver, comfort, and establish them, of which he assured them by his prophet, Isa 51:12-16, and though Jerusalem and her sons were, or would be, in a very distressed condition, through the sword and famine, which is described, Isa 51:17-20, yet they should be delivered out of it, and their persecutors should be brought into the same, Isa 51:21-23.
