1
When Pashhur the priest, the son of 1Immer, who was 2chiefofficer in the house of the LORD, heardJeremiahprophesyingthesethings,
2Pashhur had Jeremiah the prophet3beaten and put him in the 4stocks that were at the upper5BenjaminGate, which was by the house of the LORD.
3
On the nextday, when PashhurreleasedJeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiahsaid to him, "Pashhur is not the name the LORD has 6called you, but rathera7Magor-missabib.
4
"For thussays the LORD, 'Behold, I am going to make you a 8terror to yourself and to all your friends ; and while 9your eyeslook on, they will fall by the sword of their enemies. So I will 10give over allJudah to the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will carry them away as 11exiles to Babylon and will slay them with the sword.
5
'I will also give over all the 12wealth of thiscity, all its produce and all its costlythings ; even all the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give over to the 13hand of their enemies, and they will plunder them, take them away and bring them to Babylon.
6
'And you, 14Pashhur, and all who live in your house will go into captivity ; and you will enterBabylon, and there you will die and there you will be buried, you and all your 15friends to whom you have 16falselyprophesied.' "
7
O LORD, You have deceived me and I was deceived ; You have 17overcome me and prevailed. I have become a 18laughingstockallday long; Everyone19mocks me.
8
For eachtime I speak, I cryaloud ; I 20proclaimviolence and destruction, Because for me the 21word of the LORD has bresulted In reproach and derisionallday long.
9
But if I say, "I will not 22remember Him Or speakanymore in His name," Then in 23my heart it becomes like a burningfireShut up in my bones ; And I am weary of holding it in, And 24I cannotendure it.
10
For 25I have heard the whispering of many, "26Terror on everyside ! 27Denounce him; yes, let us denounce him!" cAll my 28trustedfriends , Watching for my fall, say: "Perhaps he will be ddeceived, so that we may 29prevail against him And take our revenge on him."
11
But the 30LORD is with me like a dreadchampion ; Therefore my 31persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will be utterlyashamed, because they have efailed, With an 32everlastingdisgrace that will not be forgotten.
12
Yet, O LORD of hosts, You who 33test the righteous, Who see the fmind and the heart ; Let me 34see Your vengeance on them; For 35to You I have setforth my cause.
1336Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD ! For He has 37delivered the soul of the needyone From the hand of evildoers.
14Cursed be the 38daywhen I was born ; Let the day not be blessedwhen my motherbore me!
15Cursed be the manwhobrought the news To my father, saying, "A g39babyboy has been born to you!" And made him veryhappy.
16
But let that man be like the citiesWhich the LORD40overthrewwithouthrelenting, And let him hear an 41outcry in the morning And a ishout of alarm at noon ;
17Because he did not 42kill me jbeforebirth, So that my mother would have been my grave, And her wombeverpregnant.
18Why did I evercomeforth from the womb To 43look on trouble and sorrow, So that my 44days have beenspent in 45shame ?
