2"Indeed, what good was the strength of their hands to me? Vigor had perished from them.

"From want and famine they are gaunt Who gnaw the dry ground by night in waste and desolation,

Who pluckamallow by the bushes, And whose food is the root of the broomshrub.

"They are driven from the community ; They shoutagainst them as against a thief,

So that they dwell in dreadfulbvalleys, In holes of the earth and of the rocks.
7"Among the bushes they ccry out; Under the nettles they are gatheredtogether.

"dFools , evenethosewithout a name, They were scourged from the land.

"And now I have become their f2taunt, I have even become a 3byword to them.

"They abhor me and standaloof from me, And they do not grefrain from 4spitting at my face.
11"BecausehHe has loosediHis jbowstring and 5afflicted me, They have castoff6the bridlebefore me.

"On the righthand their kbroodarises ; They 7thrust aside my feet8and build up against me their ways of destruction.

"They 9break up my path, They profitlfrom my destruction ; No one restrains them.

"As through a widebreach they come, mAmid the tempest they roll on.

"10Terrors are turnedagainst me; They pursue my nhonor as the wind, And my oprosperity has passedaway11like a cloud.

"And now12my soul is poured out pwithin me; Days of affliction have seized me.

"At night it pierces13my bonesqwithin me, And my gnawing pains takenorest.

"By a greatforce my garment is 14distorted ; It binds me about as the collar of my coat.

"He has cast me into the 15mire, And I have becomelikedust and ashes.

"I 16cry out to You for help, but You do not answer me; I stand up, and You turn Your attention against me.

"You have rbecomecruel to me; With the might of Your hand You 17persecute me.

"You 18lift me up to the wind and cause me to ride ; And You dissolve me in a storm.

"For I know that You 19will bring me to death And to the 20house of meeting for allliving.
24"Yet does not one in a heap of ruinsstretch out his hand, Or in his disastertherefore21cry out for help ?

"Have I not 22wept for the sone whose life is hard ? Was not my soulgrieved for 23the needy ?
26"When I 24expectedgood, then evilcame ; When I waited for light, 25then darknesscame.

"tI am seething26within and cannotrelax ; Days of afflictionconfront me.

"I go about u27mourningwithout comfort; I stand up in the assembly and 28cry out for help.

"I have become a brother to 29jackals And a companion of ostriches .

"My 30skinturnsblackvon me, And my 31bonesburn with wfever.

"Therefore my 32harpxis turned to mourning, And my flute to the sound of those who weep.
