46
But some of them went to the 1Pharisees and told them the things whichJesus had done.
Conspiracy to Kill Jesus
47Therefore2the chiefpriests and the Pharisees3convened a 4council, and were saying, "What are we doing? For thisman is performingmany5signs.
48
"If we let Him go on likethis, allmen will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and takeawayboth our 6place and our nation."
49
But one of them, 7Caiaphas, 8who was highpriest that year, said to them, "You knownothing at all,
50
nor do you take into account that 9it is expedient for you that onemandie for the people, and that the wholenation not perish."
51
Now he did not saythis on his owninitiative, but 10beinghighpriest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
52
and not for the nationonly, but in order that He might also11gathertogether into one the children of God who are scatteredabroad.
53
So from that day on they 12plannedtogether to kill Him.
54
ThereforeJesus13nolonger continued to walkpubliclyamong the Jews, but wentaway from there to the countrynear the wilderness, into a citycalled14Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.
55
Now15the Passover of the Jews was near, and manywent up to Jerusalem out of the countrybefore the Passover16to purifythemselves.
56
So they 17were seeking for Jesus, and were saying to oneanother as they stood in the temple, "What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all*?"
