Then 1Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon ) and all the peoplewho were with him, roseearly and campedbesideathe spring of Harod; and the camp of Midian was on the northside of bthem by the hill of 2Moreh in the valley.
The LORDsaid to Gideon, "The peoplewho are with you are toomany for Me to giveMidian into their hands, 3for Israelcwould becomeboastful, saying, 'My own dpower has delivered me.'
3"Now therefore ecome, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, '4Whoever is afraid and trembling, let him return and depart from MountGilead.' " So 22,000peoplereturned, but 10,000remained.
45Then the LORDsaid to Gideon, "The people are still too many; bring them down to the water and I will test them for you there. Therefore it shall be that he of whom I say to you, 'Thisone shall go with you,' he shall go with you; but everyone of whom I say to you, 'Thisone shall not go with you,' he shall not go."
So he brought the peopledown to the water. And the LORDsaid to Gideon, "You shall separateeveryonewholaps the water with his tongue as a doglaps, as well as everyonewhokneels to drink."
Now the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was 300men; but all the rest of the peoplekneeled to drinkwater.
The LORDsaid to Gideon, "I will deliver you 6with the 300men who lapped and will give the Midianites into your hands; so let all the other peoplego, eachman to his fhome."
So gthe 300 men took the people'sprovisions and their trumpets into their hands. And hGideon sentall the other men of Israel, each to his tent, but retained the 300men; and the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.
Now the samenight it came about that the LORDsaid to him, "Arise, godown against the camp, 7for I have given it into your hands.
"But if you are afraid to godown, go with Purah your servantdown to the camp,
and you will hearwhat they say; and 8afterward your hands will be strengthened that you may godown against the camp." So he went with Purah his servantdown to the ioutposts of the army that was in the camp.
Now the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the sons of the east were lying in the valley9as numerous as locusts; and their camels were withoutnumber, 10as numerous as the sand on the seashore .
When Gideoncame, behold, a man was relating a dream to his friend. And he said, "Behold, I jhad a dream; ka loaf of barleybread was tumbling into the camp of Midian, and it came to the tent and struck it so that it fell, and turned it lupsidedown so that the tentlayflat."
His friendreplied, "This is nothinglessthan the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has givenMidian and all the camp11into his hand."
When Gideonheard the account of the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship. He returned to the camp of Israel and said, "Arise, for the LORD has given the camp of Midian into your hands."
He divided the 300men into threemcompanies, and he puttrumpets and emptypitchers into the hands of all of them, with torchesinside the pitchers.
He said to them, "Look at me and dolikewise. And behold, when I come to the outskirts of the camp, ndo as I do.
"When I and allwho are with me blow the trumpet, then you alsoblow the trumpetsallaround the camp and say, 'For the LORD and for Gideon.' "
So Gideon and the hundredmenwho were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middlewatch, when they had justposted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and smashed the pitchers that were in their hands.
When the threeocompaniesblew the trumpets and broke the pitchers, they held the torches in their lefthands and the trumpets in their righthands for blowing, and cried, "A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!"
21Eachstood in his placearound the camp; and 12all the parmyran, crying out as they fled.
When they blew300trumpets, the 13LORDset the sword of one against another even throughout the wholeqarmy; and the rarmyfled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the edge of 14Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.
The men of Israel were summoned from 15Naphtali and Asher and allManasseh, and they pursuedMidian.
24Gideonsentmessengersthroughoutall the hillcountry of Ephraim, saying, "ComedownsagainstMidian and 16take the waters before them, as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan." So all the men of Ephraim were summoned and they took the waters as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan.
They captured the twoleaders of Midian, 17Oreb and Zeeb, and they killedOreb at the rock of Oreb, and they killedZeeb at the winepress of Zeeb, while they pursuedMidian; and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon18from across the Jordan.
