Some soldiers were questioning him, saying, "And what about us, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Do not takemoney from anyone by force, or1accuse anyone falsely, and 2be content with your wages."

Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were wondering in their heartsaboutJohn, 3as to whether he was the Christ,

4Johnanswered and said to them all, "As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the HolySpirit and fire.

"His 5winnowingfork is in His hand to thoroughlyclear His threshingfloor, and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with 6unquenchablefire."

So with manyotherexhortations he preached the gospel to the people.

But when 7Herod the tetrarch was reprimanded by him because of 8Herodias, his brother'swife, and because of all the wickedthingswhich9Herod had done,

Herod alsoaddedthis to them all: 10he lockedJohn up in prison.

2111Nowwhenall the people were baptized, Jesus was alsobaptized, and while He was 12praying, heaven was opened,

and the HolySpiritdescended upon Him in bodilyformlike a dove, and a voicecame out of heaven, "13You are My belovedSon, in You I amwell-pleased."
