11Early in the morning the chiefpriests with the elders and scribes and the wholea2Council, immediatelyheld a consultation; and bindingJesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate.
23Pilatequestioned Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And He answered him, "It is as you say."3
The chiefpriests began to accuse Him bharshly.
4ThenPilatequestioned Him again, saying, "Do You not answer? Seehowmanycharges they bringagainst You!"
But Jesus4madenofurtheranswer; soPilate was amazed.
65Now at the feast he used to release for them any oneprisonerwhom they requested.
The man namedBarabbas had beenimprisoned with the insurrectionistswho had committedmurder in the insurrection.
The crowdwent up and beganasking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.
9Pilateanswered them, saying, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?"
For he was aware that the chiefpriests had handed Him over because of envy.
But the chiefpriestsstirred up the crowd6to ask him to releaseBarabbas for them instead.
12Answeringagain, Pilatesaid to them, "Thenwhat shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?"
They shoutedcback, "Crucify Him!"
But Pilatesaid to them, "Why, whatevil has He done?" But they shoutedall the more, "Crucify Him!"
15Wishing to satisfy the crowd, PilatereleasedBarabbas for them, and after having Jesus7scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
168The soldierstook Him away into 9the dpalace (that is, the Praetorium ), and they calledtogether the whole Roman e10cohort.
They dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him;
and they began to acclaim Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
They kept beating His head with a freed, and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowingbefore Him.
20After they had mocked Him, they took the purplerobeoff Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him.
2111They pressed into service a passer-bycoming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and 12Rufus ), to bear His cross.
2213Then they brought Him to the place14Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.
They tried to give Him 15winemixed with myrrh; but He did not take it.
And they crucified Him, and 16divided up His garmentsamong themselves, castingglots for them to decide hwhateachman should take.
It was the i17thirdhourjwhen they crucified Him.
