(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eatunless* they carefullywash their hands, thus observing the 1traditions of the elders;

and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eatunless* they cleanse themselves; and there are manyotherthingswhich they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of 2cups and pitchers and copperpots.)

The Pharisees and the scribesasked Him, "Why* do Your disciples not walkaccording to the 3tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with 4impurehands?"

And He said to them, "Rightly did Isaiahprophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:'5THISPEOPLEHONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS,BUT THEIR HEART IS FARAWAY* FROM ME.

'6BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME,TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'

"Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the 7tradition of men."

He was alsosaying to them, "You are experts at settingaside the commandment of God in order to keep your 8tradition.

but you say, 'If a mansays to his fatheror his mother, whatever* I have that would help you is 11Corban (that is to say, given to God),'

you nolongerpermit him to doanything for his fatheror his mother;

thus invalidating the word of God by your 12traditionwhich you have handeddown; and you domanythingssuch as that."
