At that timeJesussaid to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? 1Everyday I used to sit in the templeteaching and you did not seize Me.

"But allthis has takenplace to fulfill2the Scriptures of the prophets."Thenall the disciplesleft Him and fled.

573Those who had seizedJesusled Him away to 4Caiaphas, the highpriest, where the scribes and the elders were gatheredtogether.

But 5Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the 6courtyard of the highpriest, and entered in, and satdown with the 7officers to see the outcome.

Now the chiefpriests and the whole8Council kept trying to obtainfalsetestimonyagainstJesus, so that they might put Him to death.

They did not find any, even though manyfalsewitnessescameforward. But later on 9twocameforward,

and said, "Thismanstated, '10I amable to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in threedays.' "

The highprieststood up and said to Him, "Do You not answer? What is it that thesemen are testifyingagainst You?"

But 11Jesuskeptsilent. 12And the highpriestsaid to Him, "I 13adjure You by 14the livingGod, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, 15the Son of God."

Jesussaid to him, "16You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter* you will see17THE SON OF MANSITTING AT THE RIGHTHAND OF POWER, and 18COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."

Then the highpriest19tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Whatfurtherneed do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have nowheard the blasphemy;
