571Those who had seizedJesusled Him away to 2Caiaphas, the highpriest, where the scribes and the elders were gatheredtogether.
But 3Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the 4courtyard of the highpriest, and entered in, and satdown with the a5officers to see the outcome.
59Now the chiefpriests and the wholeb6Council kept trying to obtainfalsetestimonyagainstJesus, so that they might put Him to death.
They did not find any, even though manyfalsewitnessescameforward. But later on 7twocameforward,
and said, "Thismanstated, '8I amable to destroy the ctemple of God and to rebuild it din threedays.' "
The highprieststood up and said to Him, "Do You not answer? What is it that thesemen are testifyingagainst You?"
But 9Jesuskeptsilent. 10And the highpriestsaid to Him, "I e11adjure You by 12the livingGod, that You tell us whether You are fthe Christ, 13the Son of God."
64Jesussaid to him, "14You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, ghereafter you will see15THE SON OF MANSITTING AT THE RIGHTHAND OF POWER, and 16COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."65Then the highpriest17tore his hrobes and said, "He has blasphemed! Whatfurtherneed do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have nowheard the blasphemy;
66what do you think?" They answered, "18He deservesdeath!"
6719Then they 20spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and othersislapped Him,
and said, "21Prophesy to us, You jChrist; who is the one who hit You?"
