11When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on 2the amountain ; and after He satdown, His disciplescame to Him.
23He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,
3"b4Blessed are the cpoor in spirit, for 5theirs is the kingdom of heaven.4"Blessed are 6those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.5"Blessed are 7the dgentle, for they shall inherit the earth.6"Blessed are 8those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.7"Blessed are 9the merciful, for they shall receivemercy.8"Blessed are 10the pure in heart, for 11they shall seeGod.9"Blessed are the peacemakers, for 12they shall be calledsons of God.10"Blessed are those who have been 13persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for 14theirs is the kingdom of heaven.11"Blessed are you when people 15insult you and persecute you, and falselysayallkinds of evilagainst you because of Me.12"Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great ; for 16in the sameway they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
13"You are the salt of the earth ; but 17if the salt has becometasteless, howecan it be madesalty again? It is nolongergood for anything, except to be thrown out and trampledunderfoot by men.14"You are 18the light of the world. A cityset on a fhillcannot be hidden ;1519nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a gbasket, but on the lampstand, and it giveslight to all who are in the house.16"Let your lightshinebeforemen in such a way that they may 20see your goodworks, and 21glorify your Father who is in heaven.17"Do not think that I came to abolish the 22Lawor the Prophets ; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.18"For truly I say to you, 23untilheaven and earthpassaway, not hthe smallestletterorstroke shall pass from the Lawuntilall is accomplished.19"Whoeverthenannulsone of the least of thesecommandments, and teachesiothers to do the same, shall be calledleast24in the kingdom of heaven ; but whoeverjkeeps and teaches them, he shall be calledgreat in the kingdom of heaven.20"For I say to you that unless your 25righteousnesssurpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
21"26You have heard that kthe ancients were told, '27YOU SHALL NOT COMMITMURDER ' and 'Whoevercommitsmurder shall be lliable to 28the court.'22"But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be mguilty before 29the court ; and whoeversays to his brother, 'nYou good-for-nothing,' shall be oguilty before p30the supremecourt ; and whoeversays, 'You fool,' shall be qguilty enough to go into the r31fieryhell.23"Thereforeif you are 32presenting your soffering at the altar, and thereremember that your brotherhassomethingagainst you,24leave your tofferingtherebefore the altar and go ; first be 33reconciled to your brother, and thencome and present your uoffering.25"34Makefriendsquickly with your opponent at lawwhile you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.26"Truly I say to you, 35you will not come out of thereuntil you have paid up the lastvcent.
