When Mosesspoke1thesewords to all the sons of Israel, 2the peoplemournedgreatly.
In the morning, however, they rose up early and went up to the aridge of the hillcountry, saying, "3Here we are; bwe have indeedsinned, but we will go up to the placewhich the LORD has promised."
But Mosessaid, "4Whythen are you transgressing the ccommandment of the LORD, when it will not succeed ?
"5Do not go up, or you will be struckdownbefore your enemies, for the LORD is not among you.
"For the Amalekites and the Canaanites will be there in front of you, and you will fall by the sword, inasmuch as you have turnedback from following the LORD. And the LORD will not be with you."
But they went up heedlessly to the dridge of the hillcountry ; neither6the ark of the covenant of the LORDnorMosesleft the camp.
Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hillcountrycamedown, and struck them and beat them down as far as 7Hormah.
