1
Then the sons of Israel, the wholecongregation, came to the 1wilderness of Zin in the firstmonth ; and the peoplestayed at Kadesh. Now Miriamdiedthere and was buriedthere.
22There was nowater for the congregation, 3and they assembled themselves againstMoses and Aaron.
34The people thus contended with Moses and spoke, saying, "5Ifonly we had perished6when our brothersperishedbefore the LORD !
4
"7Why then have you brought the LORD'Sassembly into thiswilderness, for us and our beasts to dieahere ?
5"Why have you made us come up from Egypt, to bring us in to thiswretchedplace ? 8It is not a place of bgrain or figs or vines or pomegranates, nor is therewater to drink."
6
Then Moses and Aaroncame in from the presence of the assembly to the doorway of the tent of meeting and 9fell on their faces. Then the glory of the LORDappeared to them;
7
and the LORDspoke to Moses, saying,
8"Take10the rod ; and you and your brotherAaronassemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bringforthwater for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beastsdrink."
9
So Mosestook the rod11from before the LORD, just as He had commanded him;
10
and Moses and Aarongathered the assemblybefore the rock. And he said to them, "12Listennow, you rebels ; shall we bringforthwater for you out of thisrock ?"
11
Then Moseslifted up his hand and struck the rocktwice with his rod ; and 13watercameforthabundantly, and the congregation and their beastsdrank.
12
But the LORDsaid to Moses and Aaron, "14Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bringthisassembly into the landwhich I have given them."
13Those were the waters of c15Meribah, dbecause the sons of Israelcontended with the LORD, and He proved Himself holy among them.
14
From KadeshMoses then sentmessengers to 16the king of Edom : "Thus your brotherIsrael has said, 'You 17knowall the hardship that has befallen us;
15
that our fatherswentdown to Egypt, and we stayed in Egypt a longtime, and the Egyptianstreated us and our fathersbadly.
16
'But 18when we cried out to the LORD, He heard our voice and sent19an angel and brought us out from Egypt ; now behold, we are at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.
17'Please20let us pass through your land. We will not passthroughfield or through vineyard ; we will not even drinkwater from a well. We will go along the king'shighway, not turning to the right or left, until we passthrough your territory.' "
1821Edom, however, said to him, "You shall not passthrougheus, or I will come out with the swordagainst you."
19
Again, the sons of Israelsaid to him, "We will go up by the highway, and if I and 22my livestock do drink any of your water, 23then I will fpay its price. Let me onlypassthrough on my feet, gnothing else."
20
But he said, "24You shall not passthrough." And Edomcame out against him with a heavyhforce and with a stronghand.
2125Thus Edomrefused to allowIsrael to passthrough his territory ; 26so Israelturnedaway from him.
22
Now when they set out from 27Kadesh, the sons of Israel, the wholecongregation, came to MountHor.
23
Then the LORDspoke to Moses and Aaron at 28MountHor by the border of the land of Edom, saying,
24"Aaron will be 29gathered to his people ; for he shall not enter the landwhich I have given to the sons of Israel, because30you rebelledagainst My icommand at the waters of Meribah.
25"TakeAaron and his son31Eleazar and bring them up to MountHor ;
26
and stripAaron of his garments and put them on his sonEleazar. So Aaron will be 32gathered to his people, and will diethere."
27
So Mosesdidjust as the LORD had commanded, and they went up to MountHor in the sight of all the congregation.
28
After Moses had strippedAaron of his garments and 33put them on his sonEleazar, 34Aarondiedthere on the mountaintop. Then Moses and Eleazarcamedown from the mountain.
29
When all the congregationsaw that Aaron had died, all the house of Israelwept for Aaronthirty35days.
