Psalms 59:7-17

7 Behold, they 1belch forth with their mouth; 2Swords are in their lips, For, they say, "3Who hears?"
8 But You, O LORD, 4laugh at them; You 5scoff at all the nations.
9 Because of his 6strength I will watch for You, For God is my 7stronghold.
10 My God 8in His lovingkindness will meet me; God will let me 9look triumphantly upon my foes.
11 Do not slay them, 10or my people will forget; 11Scatter them by Your power, and bring them down, O Lord, 12our shield.
12 On account of the 13sin of their mouth and the words of their lips, Let them even be 14caught in their pride, And on account of 15curses and lies which they utter.
13 16Destroy them in wrath, destroy them that they may be no more; That men may 17know that God rules in Jacob To the ends of the earth. Selah.
14 They 18return at evening, they howl like a dog, And go around the city.
15 They 19wander about for food And growl if they are not satisfied.
16 But as for me, I shall 20sing of Your strength; Yes, I shall 21joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the 22morning, For You have been my 23stronghold And a 24refuge in the day of my distress.
17 25O my strength, I will sing praises to You; For God is my 26stronghold, the God who shows me lovingkindness.

Psalms 59:7-17 Meaning and Commentary

To the chief Musician, Altaschith, Michtam of David; when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him. The history of Saul's sending messengers to watch the house of David, and to kill him when he rose in the morning, is in 1 Samuel 19:11; which was the occasion of his writing this psalm; though the title of the Syriac version of it is, "David said or composed this, when he heard that the priests were slain by Saul:" and in the same is added, "but unto us it declares the conversion of the Gentiles to the faith, and the rejection of the Jews." And which perhaps is designed in Psalm 59:5; and some interpreters are of opinion that the whole psalm is to be understood of Christ, of whom David was a type, especially in his sufferings; and there are some things in it which better agree with him than with David, as particularly his being without sin, Psalm 59:3.
