Psalm 81:2-12

Listen to Psalm 81:2-12
2 Raise a song, strike 1the timbrel, The sweet sounding 2lyre with the 3harp.
3 Blow the trumpet at the 4new moon, At the full moon, on our 5feast day.
4 For it is a statute for Israel, An ordinance of the God of Jacob.
5 He established it for a testimony in Joseph When he 6went throughout the land of Egypt. I heard a 7language that I did not know:
6 "I 8relieved his shoulder of the burden, His hands were freed from the basket.
7 "You 9called in trouble and I rescued you; I 10answered you in the hiding place of thunder; I proved you at the 11waters of Meribah. Selah.
8 "12Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you; O Israel, if you 13would listen to Me!
9 "Let there be no 14strange god among you; Nor shall you worship any foreign god.
10 "15I, the LORD, am your God, Who brought you up from the land of Egypt; 16Open your mouth wide and I will 17fill it.
11 "But My people 18did not listen to My voice, And Israel did not obey Me.
12 "So I 19gave them over to the stubbornness of their heart, To walk in their own devices.

Psalm 81:2-12 Meaning and Commentary

To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A [Psalm] of Asaph. Of "gittith," See Gill on "Ps 8:1." The Targum renders it, "upon the harp which came from Gath;" and so Jarchi says it was a musical instrument that came from Gath. The Septuagint, and the versions which follow that, render it, "for the winepresses." This psalm, according to Kimchi, is said concerning the going out of the children of Israel from Egypt; and was composed in order to be sung at their new moons and solemn feasts, which were typical of Gospel things in Gospel times; see Colossians 2:16 and so the Syriac version, "a psalm of Asaph, when David by him prepared himself for the solemnities."
