Titus 1:5-9 (New American Standard)

Qualifications of Elders

5 For this reason I left you in 1Crete, that you would set in order what remains and 2appoint 3elders in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, 4if any man is above reproach, the 5husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of 6dissipation or 7rebellion. 7 For the a8overseer must be above reproach as 9God's steward, not 10self-willed, not quick-tempered, not 11addicted to wine, not pugnacious, 12not fond of sordid gain, 8 but 13hospitable, 14loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 9 15holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in 16sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
