For this reason I left you in 1Crete, that you would set in order what remains and 2appoint 3elders in every city as I directed you,
namely, 4if any man is above reproach, the 5husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of 6dissipation or 7rebellion.
For the 8overseer must be above reproach as 9God's steward, not 10self-willed, not quick-tempered, not 11addicted to wine, not pugnacious, 12not fond of sordid gain,
but 13hospitable, 14loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,
15holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in 16sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
