John 11:30

30 Jesus had not yet come into the town but was still at the place where Martha had met him.

John 11:30 Meaning and Commentary

John 11:30

Now Jesus was not yet come into the town
Of Bethany, but stayed without, being nearer to Lazarus's grave, which he intended to go to, in order to raise him to life, it being usual to bury the without the towns and cities; (See Gill on Matthew 8:28), (See Gill on Luke 7:12).

but was in that place where Martha met him;
here he stopped, and here he continued: the Persic version reads, "but was sitting in the same place" waiting for the coming of Mary along with Martha; judging this to be a more suitable place to converse together in, than their own house, which was thronged with Jews; and especially he chose it for the reason above given.

John 11:30 In-Context

28 After Martha said this, she went back and talked to her sister Mary alone. Martha said, "The Teacher is here and he is asking for you."
29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Jesus.
30 Jesus had not yet come into the town but was still at the place where Martha had met him.
31 The Jews were with Mary in the house, comforting her. When they saw her stand and leave quickly, they followed her, thinking she was going to the tomb to cry there.
32 But Mary went to the place where Jesus was. When she saw him, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
