On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year,1 the cloud lifted2 from above the tabernacle of the Testimony.312
Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran.413
They set out, this first time, at the LORD's command through Moses.514
The divisions of the camp of Judah went first, under their standard.6 Nahshon son of Amminadab7 was in command.
Nethanel son of Zuar was over the division of the tribe8 of Issachar,916
and Eliab son of Helon10 was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun.1117
Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and Merarites, who carried it, set out.1218
The divisions of the camp of Reuben13 went next, under their standard.14 Elizur son of Shedeur15 was in command.
Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was over the division of the tribe of Simeon,1620
and Eliasaph son of Deuel was over the division of the tribe of Gad.1721
Then the Kohathites18 set out, carrying the holy things.19 The tabernacle was to be set up before they arrived.2022
The divisions of the camp of Ephraim21 went next, under their standard. Elishama son of Ammihud22 was in command.
Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the division of the tribe of Manasseh,2324
and Abidan son of Gideoni was over the division of the tribe of Benjamin.2425
Finally, as the rear guard25 for all the units, the divisions of the camp of Dan set out, under their standard. Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai26 was in command.
Pagiel son of Ocran was over the division of the tribe of Asher,2727
and Ahira son of Enan was over the division of the tribe of Naphtali.2828
This was the order of march for the Israelite divisions as they set out.
Now Moses said to Hobab29 son of Reuel30 the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law,31 "We are setting out for the place about which the LORD said, 'I will give it to you.'32 Come with us and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised good things to Israel."
He answered, "No, I will not go;33 I am going back to my own land and my own people.34"
But Moses said, "Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the desert, and you can be our eyes.3532
If you come with us, we will share with you36 whatever good things the LORD gives us.37"
So they set out38 from the mountain of the LORD and traveled for three days. The ark of the covenant of the LORD39 went before them during those three days to find them a place to rest.4034
The cloud of the LORD was over them by day when they set out from the camp.4135
Whenever the ark set out, Moses said, "Rise up,42 O LORD! May your enemies be scattered;43 may your foes flee before you.44"4536
Whenever it came to rest, he said, "Return,46 O LORD, to the countless thousands of Israel.47"
