And they said to each other, "We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.1"
Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown2 in front of the whole Israelite assembly3 gathered there.
Joshua son of Nun4 and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes57
and said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.68
If the LORD is pleased with us,7 he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey,8 and will give it to us.99
Only do not rebel10 against the LORD. And do not be afraid11 of the people of the land,12 because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with13 us.14 Do not be afraid of them."1510
But the whole assembly talked about stoning16 them. Then the glory of the LORD17 appeared at the Tent of Meeting to all the Israelites.
The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt?18 How long will they refuse to believe in me,19 in spite of all the miraculous signs20 I have performed among them?
I will strike them down with a plague21 and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation22 greater and stronger than they."2313
Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.2414
And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard25 that you, O LORD, are with these people26 and that you, O LORD, have been seen face to face,27 that your cloud stays over them,28 and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.29
