Lamentações de Jeremias 4

1 Como o ouro perdeu o brilho!Como o ouro fino ficou embaçado!As pedras sagradas estão espalhadaspelas esquinas de todas as ruas.

2 Como os preciosos filhos de Sião,que antes valiam seu peso em ouro,hoje são considerados como vasos de barro,obra das mãos de um oleiro!

3 Até os chacais oferecem o peitopara amamentar os seus filhotes,mas o meu povo não tem mais coração;é como as avestruzes do deserto.

4 De tanta sede, a língua dos bebêsgruda no céu da boca;as crianças imploram pelo pão,mas ninguém as atende.

5 Aqueles que costumavam comer comidas finaspassam necessidade nas ruas.Aqueles que se adornavam de púrpurahoje estão prostrados sobre montes de cinza.

6 A punição do meu povoé maior que a de Sodoma,que foi destruída num instantesem que ninguém a socorresse.

7 Seus príncipes eram mais brilhantes que a neve,mais brancos do que o leite;e tinham a pele mais rosada que rubis;e sua aparência lembrava safiras.

8 Mas agora estão mais negros do que o carvão;não são reconhecidos nas ruas.Sua pele enrugou-se sobre os seus ossos;agora parecem madeira seca.

9 Os que foram mortos à espadaestão melhor do que os que morreram de fome,os quais, tendo sido torturados pela fome,definham pela falta de produção das lavouras.

10 Com as próprias mãos, mulheres bondosascozinharam seus próprios filhos,que se tornaram sua comidaquando o meu povo foi destruído.

11 O SENHOR deu vazão total à sua ira;derramou a sua grande fúria.Ele acendeu em Sião um fogoque consumiu os seus alicerces.

12 Os reis da terra e os povos de todo o mundonão acreditavamque os inimigos e os adversários pudessem entrarpelas portas de Jerusalém.

13 Dentro da cidade foi derramadoo sangue dos justos,por causa do pecado dos seus profetase das maldades dos seus sacerdotes.

14 Hoje eles tateiam pelas ruascomo cegos,e tão sujos de sangue estãoque ninguém ousa tocar em suas vestes.

15 “Vocês estão imundos!”, o povo grita para eles.“Afastem-se! Não nos toquem!”Quando eles fogem e andam errantes,os povos das outras nações dizem:“Aqui eles não podem habitar”.

16 O próprio SENHOR os espalhou;ele já não cuida deles.Ninguém honra os sacerdotesnem respeita os líderes.

17 Nossos olhos estão cansadosde buscar ajuda em vão;de nossas torres ficávamos à esperade uma nação que não podia salvar-nos.

18 Cada passo nosso era vigiado;nem podíamos caminhar por nossas ruas.Nosso fim estava próximo, nossos dias estavam contados;o nosso fim já havia chegado.

19 Nossos perseguidores eram mais velozesque as águias nos céus;perseguiam-nos por sobre as montanhas,ficavam de tocaia contra nós no deserto.

20 O ungido do SENHOR, o próprio fôlego da nossa vida,foi capturado em suas armadilhas.E nós que pensávamos que soba sua sombra viveríamos entre as nações!

21 Alegre-se e exulte, ó terra de Edom,você que vive na terra de Uz.Mas a você também será servido o cálice:você será embriagada e as suas roupas serão arrancadas.

22 Ó cidade de Sião, o seu castigo terminará;o SENHOR não prolongará o seu exílio.Mas você, ó terra de Edom, ele punirá o seu pecadoe porá à mostra a sua perversidade.

Lamentações de Jeremias 4 Commentary

Chapter 4

The deplorable state of the nation is contrasted with its ancient prosperity.

Verses 1-12 What a change is here! Sin tarnishes the beauty of the most exalted powers and the most excellent gifts; but that gold, tried in the fire, which Christ bestows, never will be taken from us; its outward appearance may be dimmed, but its real value can never be changed. The horrors of the siege and destruction of Jerusalem are again described. Beholding the sad consequences of sin in the church of old, let us seriously consider to what the same causes may justly bring down the church now. But, Lord, though we have gone from thee in rebellion, yet turn to us, and turn our hearts to thee, that we may fear thy name. Come to us, bless us with awakening, converting, renewing, confirming grace.

Verses 13-20 Nothing ripens a people more for ruin, nor fills the measure faster, than the sins of priests and prophets. The king himself cannot escape, for Divine vengeance pursues him. Our anointed King alone is the life of our souls; we may safely live under his shadow, and rejoice in Him in the midst of our enemies, for He is the true God and eternal life.

Verses 21-22 Here it is foretold that an end should be put to Zion's troubles. Not the fulness of punishment deserved, but of what God has determined to inflict. An end shall be put to Edom's triumphs. All the troubles of the church and of the believer will soon be accomplished. And the doom of their enemies approaches. The Lord will bring their sins to light, and they shall lie down in eternal sorrow. Edom here represents all the enemies of the church. And the corruption, and sin of Israel, which the prophet has proved to be universal, justifies the judgments of the Lord. It shows the need of that grace in Christ Jesus, which the sin and corruption of all mankind make so necessary.

The prophet begins this chapter with a complaint of the ill usage of the dear children of God, and precious sons of Zion, La 4:1,2; relates the dreadful effects of the famine during the siege of Jerusalem, La 4:3-10; the taking and destruction of that city he imputes to the wrath of God; and represents it as incredible to the kings and inhabitants of the earth, La 4:11,12; the causes of which were the sins of the prophets, priests, and people, La 4:13-16; expresses the vain hopes they once had, but now were given up entirely, their king being taken, La 4:17-20; and the chapter is concluded with a prophecy of the destruction of the Edomites, and of the return of the Jews from captivity, La 4:21,22.
