GOD'S WORD Translation (GW) New International Version (NIV)
When the Philistines fought against Israel, the men of Israel fled from the Philistines and were killed in battle on Mount Gilboa. 1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
The Philistines caught up to Saul and his sons. They killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul's sons. 2 The Philistines pressed hard after Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua.
The heaviest fighting was against Saul. When the archers got him in their range, he was wounded by them. 3 The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him.
Saul told his armorbearer, "Draw your sword! Stab me, or these godless men will come and make fun of me." But his armorbearer refused because he was terrified. So Saul took the sword and fell on it. 4 Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me." But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
When the armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on the sword and died. 5 When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died.
So Saul, his three sons, and his dynasty died together. 6 So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.
When all the people of Israel in the valley saw that [their army] had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities. So the Philistines came to live in these cities. 7 When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.
The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons lying on Mount Gilboa. 8 The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
They stripped him and took his head and his armor. Then they sent men throughout Philistine territory to tell their idols and the people this good news. 9 They stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news among their idols and their people.
They put his armor in the temple of their gods and fastened his head to the temple of Dagon. 10 They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung up his head in the temple of Dagon.
When all the people of Jabesh Gilead heard about everything the Philistines had done to Saul, 11 When all the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard of everything the Philistines had done to Saul,
all the fighting men came and took away the dead bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. They buried the bones under the oak tree in Jabesh. Then they fasted seven days. 12 all their valiant men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. Then they buried their bones under the great tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.
So Saul died because of his unfaithfulness to the LORD: He did not obey the word of the LORD. He asked a medium to request information [from a dead person]. 13 Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance,
He didn't request information from the LORD. So the LORD killed him and turned the kingship over to David, Jesse's son. 14 and did not inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.
