New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
David consulted with all his officials, including the generals and captains of his army. 1 David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.
Then he addressed the entire assembly of Israel as follows: "If you approve and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send messages to all the Israelites throughout the land, including the priests and Levites in their towns and pasturelands. Let us invite them to come and join us. 2 He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our brothers throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come and join us.
It is time to bring back the Ark of our God, for we neglected it during the reign of Saul." 3 Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not inquire of it during the reign of Saul."
The whole assembly agreed to this, for the people could see it was the right thing to do. 4 The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.
So David summoned all the people of Israel, from one end of the country to the other, to join in bringing the Ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. 5 So David assembled all the Israelites, from the Shihor River in Egypt to Lebo Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim.
Then David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (also called Kiriath-jearim) to bring back the Ark of God, which bears the name of the LORD who is enthroned between the cherubim. 6 David and all the Israelites with him went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who is enthroned between the cherubim--the ark that is called by the Name.
They transported the Ark of God from the house of Abinadab on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it. 7 They moved the ark of God from Abinadab's house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it.
David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, singing and playing all kinds of musical instruments -- lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets. 8 David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals and trumpets.
But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah put out his hand to steady the Ark. 9 When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled.
Then the LORD's anger blazed out against Uzzah, and he struck him dead because he had laid his hand on the Ark. So Uzzah died there in the presence of God. 10 The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.
David was angry because the LORD's anger had blazed out against Uzzah. He named that place Perez-uzzah (which means "outbreak against Uzzah"). It is still called that today. 11 Then David was angry because the LORD's wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.
David was now afraid of God and asked, "How can I ever bring the Ark of God back into my care?" 12 David was afraid of God that day and asked, "How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?"
So David decided not to move the Ark into the City of David. He took it instead to the home of Obed-edom of Gath. 13 He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.
The Ark of God remained there with the family of Obed-edom for three months, and the LORD blessed him and his entire household. 14 The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the LORD blessed his household and everything he had.
