New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
If I could speak in any language in heaven or on earth but didn't love others, I would only be making meaningless noise like a loud gong or a clanging cymbal. 1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I knew all the mysteries of the future and knew everything about everything, but didn't love others, what good would I be? And if I had the gift of faith so that I could speak to a mountain and make it move, without love I would be no good to anybody. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn't love others, I would be of no value whatsoever. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love will last forever, but prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will all disappear. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
Now we know only a little, and even the gift of prophecy reveals little! 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
But when the end comes, these special gifts will all disappear. 10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.
It's like this: When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child does. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.
Now we see things imperfectly as in a poor mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God knows me now. 12 Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
There are three things that will endure -- faith, hope, and love -- and the greatest of these is love. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
