Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
When I came to you, my friends, to preach God's secret truth, I did not use big words and great learning. 1 When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.
For while I was with you, I made up my mind to forget everything except Jesus Christ and especially his death on the cross. 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
So when I came to you, I was weak and trembled all over with fear, 3 I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling.
and my teaching and message were not delivered with skillful words of human wisdom, but with convincing proof of the power of God's Spirit. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power,
Your faith, then, does not rest on human wisdom but on God's power. 5 so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power.
Yet I do proclaim a message of wisdom to those who are spiritually mature. But it is not the wisdom that belongs to this world or to the powers that rule this world - powers that are losing their power. 6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
The wisdom I proclaim is God's secret wisdom, which is hidden from human beings, but which he had already chosen for our glory even before the world was made. 7 No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.
None of the rulers of this world knew this wisdom. If they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
However, as the scripture says, "What no one ever saw or heard, what no one ever thought could happen, is the very thing God prepared for those who love him." 9 However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"--
But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, even the hidden depths of God's purposes. 10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
It is only our own spirit within us that knows all about us; in the same way, only God's Spirit knows all about God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
We have not received this world's spirit; instead, we have received the Spirit sent by God, so that we may know all that God has given us. 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.
So then, we do not speak in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, as we explain spiritual truths to those who have the Spirit. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.
Whoever does not have the Spirit cannot receive the gifts that come from God's Spirit. Such a person really does not understand them, and they seem to be nonsense, because their value can be judged only on a spiritual basis. 14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Whoever has the Spirit, however, is able to judge the value of everything, but no one is able to judge him. 15 The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment:
As the scripture says, "Who knows the mind of the Lord? Who is able to give him advice?" We, however, have the mind of Christ. 16 "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.
