Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
As a matter of fact, my friends, I could not talk to you as I talk to people who have the Spirit; I had to talk to you as though you belonged to this world, as children in the Christian faith. 1 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly--mere infants in Christ.
I had to feed you milk, not solid food, because you were not ready for it. And even now you are not ready for it, 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.
because you still live as the people of this world live. When there is jealousy among you and you quarrel with one another, doesn't this prove that you belong to this world, living by its standards? 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?
When one of you says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos" - aren't you acting like worldly people? 4 For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not mere men?
After all, who is Apollos? And who is Paul? We are simply God's servants, by whom you were led to believe. Each one of us does the work which the Lord gave him to do: 5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe--as the Lord has assigned to each his task.
I planted the seed, Apollos watered the plant, but it was God who made the plant grow. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.
The one who plants and the one who waters really do not matter. It is God who matters, because he makes the plant grow. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.
There is no difference between the one who plants and the one who waters; God will reward each one according to the work each has done. 8 The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor.
For we are partners working together for God, and you are God's field. You are also God's building. 9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.
Using the gift that God gave me, I did the work of an expert builder and laid the foundation, and someone else is building on it. But each of you must be careful how you build. 10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds.
For God has already placed Jesus Christ as the one and only foundation, and no other foundation can be laid. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Some will use gold or silver or precious stones in building on the foundation; others will use wood or grass or straw. 12 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw,
And the quality of each person's work will be seen when the Day of Christ exposes it. For on that Day fire will reveal everyone's work; the fire will test it and show its real quality. 13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work.
If what was built on the foundation survives the fire, the builder will receive a reward. 14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.
But if your work is burnt up, then you will lose it; but you yourself will be saved, as if you had escaped through the fire. 15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.
Surely you know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you! 16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?
God will destroy anyone who destroys God's temple. For God's temple is holy, and you yourselves are his temple. 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
You should not fool yourself. If any of you think that you are wise by this world's standards, you should become a fool, in order to be really wise. 18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise.
For what this world considers to be wisdom is nonsense in God's sight. As the scripture says, "God traps the wise in their cleverness"; 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness";
and another scripture says, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are worthless." 20 and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile."
No one, then, should boast about what human beings can do. Actually everything belongs to you: 21 So then, no more boasting about men! All things are yours,
Paul, Apollos, and Peter; this world, life and death, the present and the future - all these are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future--all are yours,
and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. 23 and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.
