Brothers and sisters, in the past I could not talk to you as I talk to spir- itual people. I had to talk to you as I would to people without the Spirit -- babies in Christ. 1 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly--mere infants in Christ.
The teaching I gave you was like milk, not solid food, because you were not able to take solid food. And even now you are not ready. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.
You are still not spiritual, because there is jealousy and quarreling among you, and this shows that you are not spiritual. You are acting like people of the world. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?
One of you says, "I belong to Paul," and another says, "I belong to Apollos." When you say things like this, you are acting like people of the world. 4 For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not mere men?
Is Apollos important? No! Is Paul important? No! We are only servants of God who helped you believe. Each one of us did the work God gave us to do. 5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe--as the Lord has assigned to each his task.
I planted the seed, and Apollos watered it. But God is the One who made it grow. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.
So the one who plants is not important, and the one who waters is not important. Only God, who makes things grow, is important. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.
The one who plants and the one who waters have the same purpose, and each will be rewarded for his own work. 8 The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor.
We are God's workers, working together; you are like God's farm, God's house. 9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.
Using the gift God gave me, I laid the foundation of that house like an expert builder. Others are building on that foundation, but all peo- ple should be careful how they build on it. 10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds.
The foundation that has already been laid is Jesus Christ, and no one can lay down any other foundation. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
But if people build on that foundation, using gold, silver, jewels, wood, grass, or straw, 12 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw,
their work will be clearly seen, because the Day of Judgmentn will make it visible. That Day will appear with fire, and the fire will test everyone's work to show what sort of work it was. 13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work.
If the building that has been put on the foundation still stands, the builder will get a reward. 14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.
But if the building is burned up, the builder will suffer loss. The builder will be saved, but it will be as one who escaped from a fire. 15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.
Don't you know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? 16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?
If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person, because God's temple is holy and you are that temple. 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
Do not fool yourselves. If you think you are wise in this world, you should become a fool so that you can become truly wise, 18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise.
because the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. It is written in the Scriptures, "He catches those who are wise in their own clever traps." 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness";
It is also written in the Scriptures, "The Lord knows what wise people think. He knows their thoughts are just a puff of wind." 20 and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile."
So you should not brag about human leaders. All things belong to you: 21 So then, no more boasting about men! All things are yours,
Paul, Apollos, and Peter; the world, life, death, the present, and the future -- all these belong to you. 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future--all are yours,
And you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. 23 and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.
