New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn't talk to you as I would to mature Christians. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in the Christian life. 1 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly--mere infants in Christ.
I had to feed you with milk and not with solid food, because you couldn't handle anything stronger. And you still aren't ready, 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.
for you are still controlled by your own sinful desires. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn't that prove you are controlled by your own desires? You are acting like people who don't belong to the Lord. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?
When one of you says, "I am a follower of Paul," and another says, "I prefer Apollos," aren't you acting like those who are not Christians? 4 For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not mere men?
Who is Apollos, and who is Paul, that we should be the cause of such quarrels? Why, we're only servants. Through us God caused you to believe. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. 5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe--as the Lord has assigned to each his task.
My job was to plant the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God, not we, who made it grow. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.
The ones who do the planting or watering aren't important, but God is important because he is the one who makes the seed grow. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.
The one who plants and the one who waters work as a team with the same purpose. Yet they will be rewarded individually, according to their own hard work. 8 The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor.
We work together as partners who belong to God. You are God's field, God's building -- not ours. 9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.
Because of God's special favor to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. 10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds.
For no one can lay any other foundation than the one we already have -- Jesus Christ. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Now anyone who builds on that foundation may use gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. 12 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw,
But there is going to come a time of testing at the judgment day to see what kind of work each builder has done. Everyone's work will be put through the fire to see whether or not it keeps its value. 13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work.
If the work survives the fire, that builder will receive a reward. 14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.
But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builders themselves will be saved, but like someone escaping through a wall of flames. 15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.
Don't you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?
God will bring ruin upon anyone who ruins this temple. For God's temple is holy, and you Christians are that temple. 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
Stop fooling yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world's standards, you will have to become a fool so you can become wise by God's standards. 18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise.
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, "God catches those who think they are wise in their own cleverness." 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness";
And again, "The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are worthless." 20 and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile."
So don't take pride in following a particular leader. Everything belongs to you: 21 So then, no more boasting about men! All things are yours,
Paul and Apollos and Peter ; the whole world and life and death; the present and the future. Everything belongs to you, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future--all are yours,
and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. 23 and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.
