New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among you, something so evil that even the pagans don't do it. I am told that you have a man in your church who is living in sin with his father's wife. 1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans: A man has his father's wife.
And you are so proud of yourselves! Why aren't you mourning in sorrow and shame? And why haven't you removed this man from your fellowship? 2 And you are proud! Shouldn't you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this?
Even though I am not there with you in person, I am with you in the Spirit. Concerning the one who has done this, I have already passed judgment 3 Even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. And I have already passed judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present.
in the name of the Lord Jesus. You are to call a meeting of the church, and I will be there in spirit, and the power of the Lord Jesus will be with you as you meet. 4 When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present,
Then you must cast this man out of the church and into Satan's hands, so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved when the Lord returns. 5 hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.
How terrible that you should boast about your spirituality, and yet you let this sort of thing go on. Don't you realize that if even one person is allowed to go on sinning, soon all will be affected? 6 Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough?
Remove this wicked person from among you so that you can stay pure. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us. 7 Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast--as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
So let us celebrate the festival, not by eating the old bread of wickedness and evil, but by eating the new bread of purity and truth. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.
When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. 9 I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people--
But I wasn't talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or who are greedy or are swindlers or idol worshipers. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that. 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.
What I meant was that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a Christian yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or a drunkard, or a swindler. Don't even eat with such people. 11 But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.
It isn't my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your job to judge those inside the church who are sinning in these ways. 12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside?
God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, "You must remove the evil person from among you." 13 God will judge those outside. "Expel the wicked man from among you."
