New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
The one who existed from the beginning is the one we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is Jesus Christ, the Word of life. 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched--this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.
This one who is life from God was shown to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and announce to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was shown to us. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.
We are telling you about what we ourselves have actually seen and heard, so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
We are writing these things so that our joy will be complete. 4 We write this to make our joy complete.
This is the message he has given us to announce to you: God is light and there is no darkness in him at all. 5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness. We are not living in the truth. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.
But if we are living in the light of God's presence, just as Christ is, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from every sin. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth. 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
