My children, I am writing you these things so that you won't sin. But if anyone does sin, we have Yeshua the Messiah, the Tzaddik, who pleads our cause with the Father. 1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
Also, he is the kapparah for our sins - and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
The way we can be sure we know him is if we are obeying his commands. 3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.
Anyone who says, "I know him," but isn't obeying his commands is a liar - the truth is not in him. 4 The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But if someone keeps doing what he says, then truly love for God has been brought to its goal in him. This is how we are sure that we are united with him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him:
A person who claims to be continuing in union with him ought to conduct his life the way he did. 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command. On the contrary, it is an old command, which you have had from the beginning; the old command is the message which you have heard before. 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard.
Yet I am writing you a new command, and its reality is seen both in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.
Anyone who claims to be in this light while hating his brother is still in the dark. 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.
The person who keeps loving his brother remains in the light, and there is nothing in him that could make him trip. 10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.
But the person who hates his brother is in the dark - yes, he is walking in the dark, and he doesn't know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.
You children, I am writing you because your sins have been forgiven for his sake. 12 I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
You fathers, I am writing you because you have known him who has existed from the beginning. You young people, I am writing you because you have overcome the Evil One. 13 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father.
You children, I have written you because you have known the Father. You fathers, I have written you because you have known him who has existed from the beginning. You young people, I have written you because you are strong the Word of God remains in you, and you have overcome the Evil One. 14 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
Do not love the world or the things of the world. If someone loves the world, then love for the Father is not in him; 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
because all the things of the world - the desires of the old nature, the desires of the eyes, and the pretensions of life - are not from the Father but from the world. 16 For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world.
And the world is passing away, along with its desires. But whoever does God's will remains forever. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
Children, this is the Last Hour. You have heard that an Anti-Messiah is coming; and in fact, many anti-Messiahs have arisen now - which is how we know that this is the Last Hour. 18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.
They went out from us, but they weren't part of us; for had they been part of us, they would have remained with us. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
But you have received the Messiah's anointing from HaKadosh, and you know all this. 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
It is not because you don't know the truth that I have written to you, but because you do know it, and because no lie has its origin in the truth. 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.
Who is a liar at all, if not the person who denies that Yeshua is the Messiah? Such a person is an anti-Messiah - he is denying the Father and the Son. 22 Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist--he denies the Father and the Son.
Everyone who denies the Son is also without the Father, but the person who acknowledges the Son has the Father as well. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
Let what you heard from the beginning remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you will also remain in union with both the Son and the Father. 24 See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
And this is what he has promised us: eternal life. 25 And this is what he promised us--even eternal life.
I have written you these things about the people who are trying to deceive you. 26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.
As for you, the Messianic anointing you received from the Father remains in you, so that you have no need for anyone to teach you. On the contrary, as his Messianic anointing continues to teach you about all things, and is true, not a counterfeit, so, just as he taught you, remain united with him. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has taught you, remain in him.
And now, children, remain united with him; so that when he appears, we may have confidence and not shrink back from him in shame at his coming. 28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.
If you know that he is righteous, you should also know that he is the Father of everyone who does what is right. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
