New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if you do sin, there is someone to plead for you before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who pleases God completely. 1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
He is the sacrifice for our sins. He takes away not only our sins but the sins of all the world. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
And how can we be sure that we belong to him? By obeying his commandments. 3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.
If someone says, "I belong to God," but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar and does not live in the truth. 4 The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But those who obey God's word really do love him. That is the way to know whether or not we live in him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him:
Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Christ did. 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment, for it is an old one you have always had, right from the beginning. This commandment -- to love one another -- is the same message you heard before. 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard.
Yet it is also new. This commandment is true in Christ and is true among you, because the darkness is disappearing and the true light is already shining. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.
If anyone says, "I am living in the light," but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is still living in darkness. 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.
Anyone who loves other Christians is living in the light and does not cause anyone to stumble. 10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.
Anyone who hates a Christian brother or sister is living and walking in darkness. Such a person is lost, having been blinded by the darkness. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.
I am writing to you, my dear children, because your sins have been forgiven because of Jesus. 12 I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
I am writing to you who are mature because you know Christ, the one who is from the beginning. I am writing to you who are young because you have won your battle with Satan. 13 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father.
I have written to you, children, because you have known the Father. I have written to you who are mature because you know Christ, the one who is from the beginning. I have written to you who are young because you are strong with God's word living in your hearts, and you have won your battle with Satan. 14 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
Stop loving this evil world and all that it offers you, for when you love the world, you show that you do not have the love of the Father in you. 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For the world offers only the lust for physical pleasure, the lust for everything we see, and pride in our possessions. These are not from the Father. They are from this evil world. 16 For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world.
And this world is fading away, along with everything it craves. But if you do the will of God, you will live forever. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
Dear children, the last hour is here. You have heard that the Antichrist is coming, and already many such antichrists have appeared. From this we know that the end of the world has come. 18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.
These people left our churches because they never really belonged with us; otherwise they would have stayed with us. When they left us, it proved that they do not belong with us. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
But you are not like that, for the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and all of you know the truth. 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
So I am writing to you not because you don't know the truth but because you know the difference between truth and falsehood. 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.
And who is the great liar? The one who says that Jesus is not the Christ. Such people are antichrists, for they have denied the Father and the Son. 22 Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist--he denies the Father and the Son.
Anyone who denies the Son doesn't have the Father either. But anyone who confesses the Son has the Father also. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
So you must remain faithful to what you have been taught from the beginning. If you do, you will continue to live in fellowship with the Son and with the Father. 24 See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
And in this fellowship we enjoy the eternal life he promised us. 25 And this is what he promised us--even eternal life.
I have written these things to you because you need to be aware of those who want to lead you astray. 26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.
But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don't need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you all things, and what he teaches is true -- it is not a lie. So continue in what he has taught you, and continue to live in Christ. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has taught you, remain in him.
And now, dear children, continue to live in fellowship with Christ so that when he returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from him in shame. 28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.
Since we know that God is always right, we also know that all who do what is right are his children. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
