Everyone who believes that Yeshua is the Messiah has God as his father, and everyone who loves a father loves his offspring too. 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.
Here is how we know that we love God's children: when we love God, we also do what he commands. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.
For loving God means obeying his commands. Moreover, his commands are not burdensome, 3 This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,
because everything which has God as its Father overcomes the world. And this is what victoriously overcomes the world: our trust. 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
Who does overcome the world if not the person who believes that Yeshua is the Son of God? 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
He is the one who came by means of water and blood, Yeshua the Messiah - not with water only, but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit bears witness, because the Spirit is the truth. 6 This is the one who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.
There are three witnesses - 7 For there are three that testify:
the Spirit, the water and the blood - and these three are in agreement. 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.
If we accept human witness, God's witness is stronger, because it is the witness which God has given about his Son. 9 We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.
Those who keep trusting in the Son of God have this witness in them. Those who do not keep trusting God have made him out to be a liar, because they have not trusted in the witness which God has given about his Son. 10 Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.
And this is the witness: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
Those who have the Son have the life; those who do not have the Son of God do not have the life. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
I have written you these things so that you may know that you have eternal life - you who keep trusting in the person and power of the Son of God. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
This is the confidence we have in his presence: if we ask anything that accords with his will, he hears us. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask - then we know that we have what we have asked from him. 15 And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him.
If anyone sees his brother committing a sin that does not lead to death, he will ask; and God will give him life for those whose sinning does not lead to death. There is sin that does lead to death; I am not saying he should pray about that. 16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.
All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
We know that everyone who has God as his Father does not go on sinning; on the contrary, the Son born of God protects him, and the Evil One does not touch him. 18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him.
We know that we are from God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the Evil One. 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment, so that we may know who is genuine; moreover, we are united with the One who is genuine, united with his Son Yeshua the Messiah. He is the genuine God and eternal life. 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true--even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
Children, guard yourselves against false gods! 21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
