World English Bible (WEB) New International Version (NIV)
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. Whoever loves the father also loves the child who is born of him. 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep his commandments. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous. 3 This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith. 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and the blood. 6 This is the one who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.
It is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify:
For there are three who bear witness, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood; and the three agree as one. 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.
If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is God's testimony which he has testified concerning his Son. 9 We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.
He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in him. He who doesn't believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. 10 Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.
The testimony is this, that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He who has the Son has the life. He who doesn't have God's Son doesn't have the life. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
This is the boldness which we have toward him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
And if we know that he listens to us whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him. 15 And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him.
If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life for those who sin not to death. There is a sin leading to death. I don't say that concerning this he should make a request. 16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.
All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
We know that whoever is born of God doesn't sin, but he who was born of God keeps himself, and the evil one doesn't touch him. 18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him.
We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.
We know that the Son of God has come, and has given us an understanding, that we know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true--even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
Little children, keep yourselves from idols. 21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
