Young's Literal Translation (YLT) New International Version (NIV)
Every one who is believing that Jesus is the Christ, of God he hath been begotten, and every one who is loving Him who did beget, doth love also him who is begotten of Him: 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.
in this we know that we love the children of God, when we may love God, and His commands may keep; 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.
for this is the love of God, that His commands we may keep, and His commands are not burdensome; 3 This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,
because every one who is begotten of God doth overcome the world, and this is the victory that did overcome the world -- our faith; 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
who is he who is overcoming the world, if not he who is believing that Jesus is the Son of God? 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
This one is he who did come through water and blood -- Jesus the Christ, not in the water only, but in the water and the blood; and the Spirit it is that is testifying, because the Spirit is the truth, 6 This is the one who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.
because three are who are testifying [in the heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these -- the three -- are one; 7 For there are three that testify:
and three are who are testifying in the earth], the Spirit, and the water, and the blood, and the three are into the one. 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.
If the testimony of men we receive, the testimony of God is greater, because this is the testimony of God that He hath testified concerning His Son. 9 We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.
He who is believing in the Son of God, hath the testimony in himself; he who is not believing God, a liar hath made Him, because he hath not believed in the testimony that God hath testified concerning His Son; 10 Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.
and this is the testimony, that life age-during did God give to us, and this -- the life -- is in His Son; 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
he who is having the Son, hath the life; he who is not having the Son of God -- the life he hath not. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
These things I did write to you who are believing in the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that life ye have age-during, and that ye may believe in the name of the Son of God. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
And this is the boldness that we have toward Him, that if anything we may ask according to his will, He doth hear us, 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
and if we have known that He doth hear us, whatever we may ask, we have known that we have the requests that we have requested from Him. 15 And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him.
If any one may see his brother sinning a sin not unto death, he shall ask, and He shall give to him life to those sinning not unto death; there is sin to death, not concerning it do I speak that he may beseech; 16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.
all unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not unto death. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
We have known that every one who hath been begotten of God doth not sin, but he who was begotten of God doth keep himself, and the evil one doth not touch him; 18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him.
we have known that of God we are, and the whole world in the evil doth lie; 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.
and we have known that the Son of God is come, and hath given us a mind, that we may know Him who is true, and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ; this one is the true God and the life age-during! 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true--even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
Little children, guard yourselves from the idols! Amen. 21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
