Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
From Peter, apostle of Jesus Christ - To God's chosen people who live as refugees scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God's elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia,
You were chosen according to the purpose of God the Father and were made a holy people by his Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be purified by his blood. May grace and peace be yours in full measure. 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! Because of his great mercy he gave us new life by raising Jesus Christ from death. This fills us with a living hope, 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
and so we look forward to possessing the rich blessings that God keeps for his people. He keeps them for you in heaven, where they cannot decay or spoil or fade away. 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade--kept in heaven for you,
They are for you, who through faith are kept safe by God's power for the salvation which is ready to be revealed at the end of time. 5 who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
Be glad about this, even though it may now be necessary for you to be sad for a while because of the many kinds of trials you suffer. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.
Their purpose is to prove that your faith is genuine. Even gold, which can be destroyed, is tested by fire; and so your faith, which is much more precious than gold, must also be tested, so that it may endure. Then you will receive praise and glory and honor on the Day when Jesus Christ is revealed. 7 These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
You love him, although you have not seen him, and you believe in him, although you do not now see him. So you rejoice with a great and glorious joy which words cannot express, 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
because you are receiving the salvation of your souls, which is the purpose of your faith in him. 9 for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
It was concerning this salvation that the prophets made careful search and investigation, and they prophesied about this gift which God would give you. 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care,
They tried to find out when the time would be and how it would come. This was the time to which Christ's Spirit in them was pointing, in predicting the sufferings that Christ would have to endure and the glory that would follow. 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.
God revealed to these prophets that their work was not for their own benefit, but for yours, as they spoke about those things which you have now heard from the messengers who announced the Good News by the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. These are things which even the angels would like to understand. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
So then, have your minds ready for action. Keep alert and set your hope completely on the blessing which will be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.
Be obedient to God, and do not allow your lives to be shaped by those desires you had when you were still ignorant. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.
Instead, be holy in all that you do, just as God who called you is holy. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;
The scripture says, "Be holy because I am holy." 16 for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."
You call him Father, when you pray to God, who judges all people by the same standard, according to what each one has done; so then, spend the rest of your lives here on earth in reverence for him. 17 Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear.
For you know what was paid to set you free from the worthless manner of life handed down by your ancestors. It was not something that can be destroyed, such as silver or gold; 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers,
it was the costly sacrifice of Christ, who was like a lamb without defect or flaw. 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
He had been chosen by God before the creation of the world and was revealed in these last days for your sake. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.
Through him you believe in God, who raised him from death and gave him glory; and so your faith and hope are fixed on God. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
Now that by your obedience to the truth you have purified yourselves and have come to have a sincere love for other believers, love one another earnestly with all your heart. 22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.
For through the living and eternal word of God you have been born again as the children of a parent who is immortal, not mortal. 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
As the scripture says, "All human beings are like grass, and all their glory is like wild flowers. The grass withers, and the flowers fall, 24 For, "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of the Lord remains forever." This word is the Good News that was proclaimed to you. 25 but the word of the Lord stands forever." And this is the word that was preached to you.
