Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God's elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia,
who have been chosen and destined by God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit to be obedient to Jesus Christ and to be sprinkled with his blood: May grace and peace be yours in abundance. 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade--kept in heaven for you,
who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 5 who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.
so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 7 These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 9 for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that was to be yours made careful search and inquiry, 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care,
inquiring about the person or time that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated when it testified in advance to the sufferings destined for Christ and the subsequent glory. 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.
It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in regard to the things that have now been announced to you through those who brought you good news by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look! 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.
Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. 13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.
Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.
Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;
for it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." 16 for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."
If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. 17 Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear.
You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers,
but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.
Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.
Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. 22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.
You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
For "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 24 For, "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of the Lord endures forever." That word is the good news that was announced to you. 25 but the word of the Lord stands forever." And this is the word that was preached to you.
