Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
In the same way you wives must submit yourselves to your husbands, so that if any of them do not believe God's word, your conduct will win them over to believe. It will not be necessary for you to say a word, 1 Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives,
because they will see how pure and reverent your conduct is. 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
You should not use outward aids to make yourselves beautiful, such as the way you fix your hair, or the jewelry you put on, or the dresses you wear. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes.
Instead, your beauty should consist of your true inner self, the ageless beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of the greatest value in God's sight. 4 Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.
For the devout women of the past who placed their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful by submitting themselves to their husbands. 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands,
Sarah was like that; she obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are now her daughters if you do good and are not afraid of anything. 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.
In the same way you husbands must live with your wives with the proper understanding that they are more delicate than you. Treat them with respect, because they also will receive, together with you, God's gift of life. Do this so that nothing will interfere with your prayers. 7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
To conclude: you must all have the same attitude and the same feelings; love one another, and be kind and humble with one another. 8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.
Do not pay back evil with evil or cursing with cursing; instead, pay back with a blessing, because a blessing is what God promised to give you when he called you. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
As the scripture says, "If you want to enjoy life and wish to see good times, you must keep from speaking evil and stop telling lies. 10 For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.
You must turn away from evil and do good; you must strive for peace with all your heart. 11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.
For the Lord watches over the righteous and listens to their prayers; but he opposes those who do evil." 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."
Who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? 13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?
But even if you should suffer for doing what is right, how happy you are! Do not be afraid of anyone, and do not worry. 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened."
But have reverence for Christ in your hearts, and honor him as Lord. Be ready at all times to answer anyone who asks you to explain the hope you have in you, 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
but do it with gentleness and respect. Keep your conscience clear, so that when you are insulted, those who speak evil of your good conduct as followers of Christ will become ashamed of what they say. 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
For it is better to suffer for doing good, if this should be God's will, than for doing evil. 17 It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
For Christ died for sins once and for all, a good man on behalf of sinners, in order to lead you to God. He was put to death physically, but made alive spiritually, 18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit,
and in his spiritual existence he went and preached to the imprisoned spirits. 19 through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison
These were the spirits of those who had not obeyed God when he waited patiently during the days that Noah was building his boat. The few people in the boat - eight in all - were saved by the water, 20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,
which was a symbol pointing to baptism, which now saves you. It is not the washing off of bodily dirt, but the promise made to God from a good conscience. It saves you through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
who has gone to heaven and is at the right side of God, ruling over all angels and heavenly authorities and powers. 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand--with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
