The Darby Translation (DBY) New International Version (NIV)
Christ, then, having suffered for us in [the] flesh, do *ye* also arm yourselves with the same mind; for he that has suffered in [the] flesh has done with sin, 1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin.
no longer to live the rest of [his] time in [the] flesh to men's lusts, but to God's will. 2 As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.
For the time past [is] sufficient [for us] to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, walking in lasciviousness, lusts, wine-drinking, revels, drinkings, and unhallowed idolatries. 3 For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do--living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.
Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with [them] to the same sink of corruption, speaking injuriously [of you]; 4 They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you.
who shall render account to him who is ready to judge [the] living and [the] dead. 5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
For to this [end] were the glad tidings preached to [the] dead also, that they might be judged, as regards men, after [the] flesh, but live, as regards God, after [the] Spirit. 6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.
But the end of all things is drawn nigh: be sober therefore, and be watchful unto prayers; 7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.
but before all things having fervent love among yourselves, because love covers a multitude of sins; 8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
hospitable one to another, without murmuring; 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
each according as he has received a gift, ministering it to one another, as good stewards of [the] various grace of God. 10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.
If any one speak -- as oracles of God; if any one minister -- as of strength which God supplies; that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the might for the ages of ages. Amen. 11 If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Beloved, take not [as] strange the fire [of persecution] which has taken place amongst you for [your] trial, as if a strange thing was happening to you; 12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.
but as ye have share in the sufferings of Christ, rejoice, that in the revelation of his glory also ye may rejoice with exultation. 13 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.
If ye are reproached in [the] name of Christ, blessed [are ye]; for the [Spirit] of glory and the Spirit of God rests upon you: [on their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified.] 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.
Let none of you suffer indeed as murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or as overseer of other people's matters; 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.
but if as a christian, let him not be ashamed, but glorify God in this name. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.
For the time of having the judgment begin from the house of God [is come]; but if first from us, what [shall be] the end of those who obey not the glad tidings of God? 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
And if the righteous is difficultly saved, where shall the impious and [the] sinner appear? 18 And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?"
Wherefore also let them who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing to a faithful Creator. 19 So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.
