The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
I have a special concern for you church leaders. I know what it's like to be a leader, in on Christ's sufferings as well as the coming glory. 1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed:
Here's my concern: that you care for God's flock with all the diligence of a shepherd. Not because you have to, but because you want to please God. Not calculating what you can get out of it, but acting spontaneously.[ 2 Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve;
Not bossily telling others what to do, but tenderly showing them the way. 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
When God, who is the best shepherd of all, comes out in the open with his rule, he'll see that you've done it right and commend you lavishly. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
And you who are younger must follow your leaders. But all of you, leaders and followers alike, are to be down to earth with each other, for - God has had it with the proud, But takes delight in just plain people. 5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."
So be content with who you are, and don't put on airs. God's strong hand is on you; he'll promote you at the right time. 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Keep a cool head. Stay alert. The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping. 8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
Keep your guard up. You're not the only ones plunged into these hard times. It's the same with Christians all over the world. So keep a firm grip on the faith. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
The suffering won't last forever. It won't be long before this generous God who has great plans for us in Christ - eternal and glorious plans they are! - will have you put together and on your feet for good. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
He gets the last word; yes, he does. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
I'm sending this brief letter to you by Silas, a most dependable brother. I have the highest regard for him. I've written as urgently and accurately as I know how. This is God's generous truth; embrace it with both arms! 12 With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.
The church in exile here with me - but not for a moment forgotten by God - wants to be remembered to you. Mark, who is like a son to me, says hello. 13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.
Give holy embraces all around! Peace to you - to all who walk in Christ's ways. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
