1 ?lie, le Thischbite, l'un des habitants de Galaad, dit ? Achab: L'?ternel est vivant, le Dieu d'Isra?l, dont je suis le serviteur! il n'y aura ces ann?es-ci ni ros?e ni pluie, sinon ? ma parole.

1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word."

2 Et la parole de l'?ternel fut adress?e ? ?lie, en ces mots:

2 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah:
|
|
3 Pars d'ici, dirige-toi vers l'orient, et cache-toi pr?s du torrent de Kerith, qui est en face du Jourdain.
|
3 "Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan.
|
|
4 Tu boiras de l'eau du torrent, et j'ai ordonn? aux corbeaux de te nourrir l?.
|
4 You will drink from the brook, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there."

|
5 Il partit et fit selon la parole de l'?ternel, et il alla s'?tablir pr?s du torrent de Kerith, qui est en face du Jourdain.
|
5 So he did what the LORD had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there.
|
|
6 Les corbeaux lui apportaient du pain et de la viande le matin, et du pain et de la viande le soir, et il buvait de l'eau du torrent.
|
6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.
|
|
7 Mais au bout d'un certain temps le torrent fut ? sec, car il n'?tait point tomb? de pluie dans le pays.
|
7 Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.
|
|
8 Alors la parole de l'?ternel lui fut adress?e en ces mots:
|
8 Then the word of the LORD came to him:
|
|
9 L?ve-toi, va ? Sarepta, qui appartient ? Sidon, et demeure l?. Voici, j'y ai ordonn? ? une femme veuve de te nourrir.
|
9 "Go at once to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have commanded a widow in that place to supply you with food."
|
|
10 Il se leva, et il alla ? Sarepta. Comme il arrivait ? l'entr?e de la ville, voici, il y avait l? une femme veuve qui ramassait du bois. Il l'appela, et dit: Va me chercher, je te prie, un peu d'eau dans un vase, afin que je boive.
|
10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, "Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?"
|
|
11 Et elle alla en chercher. Il l'appela de nouveau, et dit: Apporte-moi, je te prie, un morceau de pain dans ta main.
|
11 As she was going to get it, he called, "And bring me, please, a piece of bread."
|
|
12 Et elle r?pondit: L'?ternel, ton Dieu, est vivant! je n'ai rien de cuit, je n'ai qu'une poign?e de farine dans un pot et un peu d'huile dans une cruche. Et voici, je ramasse deux morceaux de bois, puis je rentrerai et je pr?parerai cela pour moi et pour mon fils; nous mangerons, apr?s quoi nous mourrons.

12 "As surely as the LORD your God lives," she replied, "I don't have any bread--only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it--and die."

13 ?lie lui dit: Ne crains point, rentre, fais comme tu as dit. Seulement, pr?pare-moi d'abord avec cela un petit g?teau, et tu me l'apporteras; tu en feras ensuite pour toi et pour ton fils.
|
13 Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.
|
|
14 Car ainsi parle l'?ternel, le Dieu d'Isra?l: La farine qui est dans le pot ne manquera point et l'huile qui est dans la cruche ne diminuera point, jusqu'au jour o? l'?ternel fera tomber de la pluie sur la face du sol.
|
14 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain on the land.' "
|

15 Elle alla, et elle fit selon la parole d'?lie. Et pendant longtemps elle eut de quoi manger, elle et sa famille, aussi bien qu'?lie.
|
15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family.
|
|
16 La farine qui ?tait dans le pot ne manqua point, et l'huile qui ?tait dans la cruche ne diminua point, selon la parole que l'?ternel avait prononc?e par ?lie.
|
16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah.
|
|
17 Apr?s ces choses, le fils de la femme, ma?tresse de la maison, devint malade, et sa maladie fut si violente qu'il ne resta plus en lui de respiration.
|
17 Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing.
|
|
18 Cette femme dit alors ? ?lie: Qu'y a-t-il entre moi et toi, homme de Dieu? Es-tu venu chez moi pour rappeler le souvenir de mon iniquit?, et pour faire mourir mon fils?
|
18 She said to Elijah, "What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?"
|
|
19 Il lui r?pondit: Donne-moi ton fils. Et il le prit du sein de la femme, le monta dans la chambre haute o? il demeurait, et le coucha sur son lit.
|
19 "Give me your son," Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed.
|
|
20 Puis il invoqua l'?ternel, et dit: ?ternel, mon Dieu, est-ce que tu affligerais, au point de faire mourir son fils, m?me cette veuve chez qui j'ai ?t? re?u comme un h?te?
|
20 Then he cried out to the LORD, "O LORD my God, have you brought tragedy also upon this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?"
|
|
21 Et il s'?tendit trois fois sur l'enfant, invoqua l'?ternel, et dit: ?ternel, mon Dieu, je t'en prie, que l'?me de cet enfant revienne au dedans de lui!
|
21 Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried to the LORD, "O LORD my God, let this boy's life return to him!"
|
|
22 L'?ternel ?couta la voix d'?lie, et l'?me de l'enfant revint au dedans de lui, et il fut rendu ? la vie.
|
22 The LORD heard Elijah's cry, and the boy's life returned to him, and he lived.
|
|
23 ?lie prit l'enfant, le descendit de la chambre haute dans la maison, et le donna ? sa m?re. Et ?lie dit: Vois, ton fils est vivant.
|
23 Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, "Look, your son is alive!"
|
|
24 Et la femme dit ? ?lie: Je reconnais maintenant que tu es un homme de Dieu, et que la parole de l'?ternel dans ta bouche est v?rit?.
|
24 Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth."
