Bible in Basic English (BBE) New International Version (NIV)
And last of all, the prayer which we make to you from our heart and in the name of the Lord Jesus, is this: that as we made clear to you what sort of behaviour is pleasing to God, as in fact you are doing now, so you will go on in these ways, but more and more. 1 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
Because you have in mind the orders we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
For the purpose of God for you is this: that you may be holy, and may keep yourselves from the desires of the flesh; 3 It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
So that every one of you may keep his body holy and in honour; 4 that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable,
Not in the passion of evil desires, like the Gentiles, who have no knowledge of God; 5 not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;
And that no man may make attempts to get the better of his brother in business: for the Lord is the judge in all these things, as we said to you before and gave witness. 6 and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you.
Because it is God's purpose that our way of life may be not unclean but holy. 7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
Whoever, then, goes against this word, goes against not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you. 8 Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
But about loving the brothers, there is no need for me to say anything to you in this letter: for you have the teaching of God that love for one another is right and necessary; 9 Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.
And, truly, you are lovers of all the brothers in Macedonia; but it is our desire that your love may be increased still more; 10 And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.
And that you may take pride in being quiet and doing your business, working with your hands as we gave you orders; 11 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you,
That you may be respected by those who are outside, and may have need of nothing. 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
But it is our desire, brothers, that you may be certain about those who are sleeping; so that you may have no need for sorrow, as others have who are without hope. 13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.
For if we have faith that Jesus underwent death and came back again, even so those who are sleeping will come again with him by God's power. 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are still living at the coming of the Lord, will not go before those who are sleeping. 15 According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.
Because the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a word of authority, with the voice of the chief angel, with the sound of a horn: and the dead in Christ will come to life first; 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
Then we who are still living will be taken up together with them into the clouds to see the Lord in the air: and so will we be for ever with the Lord. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
So then, give comfort to one another with these words. 18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.
