Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
There is no need to write you, friends, about the times and occasions when these things will happen. 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you,
For you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come as a thief comes at night. 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
When people say, "Everything is quiet and safe," then suddenly destruction will hit them! It will come as suddenly as the pains that come upon a woman in labor, and people will not escape. 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
But you, friends, are not in the darkness, and the Day should not take you by surprise like a thief. 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.
All of you are people who belong to the light, who belong to the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
So then, we should not be sleeping like the others; we should be awake and sober. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled.
It is at night when people sleep; it is at night when they get drunk. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.
But we belong to the day, and we should be sober. We must wear faith and love as a breastplate, and our hope of salvation as a helmet. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
God did not choose us to suffer his anger, but to possess salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
who died for us in order that we might live together with him, whether we are alive or dead when he comes. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.
And so encourage one another and help one another, just as you are now doing. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
We beg you, our friends, to pay proper respect to those who work among you, who guide and instruct you in the Christian life. 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you.
Treat them with the greatest respect and love because of the work they do. Be at peace among yourselves. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.
We urge you, our friends, to warn the idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
See that no one pays back wrong for wrong, but at all times make it your aim to do good to one another and to all people. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.
Be joyful always, 16 Be joyful always;
pray at all times, 17 pray continually;
be thankful in all circumstances. This is what God wants from you in your life in union with Christ Jesus. 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
Do not restrain the Holy Spirit; 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire;
do not despise inspired messages. 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt.
Put all things to the test: keep what is good 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good.
and avoid every kind of evil. 22 Avoid every kind of evil.
May the God who gives us peace make you holy in every way and keep your whole being - spirit, soul, and body - free from every fault at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He who calls you will do it, because he is faithful. 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.
Pray also for us, friends. 25 Brothers, pray for us.
Greet all the believers with the kiss of peace. 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
I urge you by the authority of the Lord to read this letter to all the believers. 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
