Lexham English Bible (LEB) New International Version (NIV)
Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need [of anything] to be written to you, 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you,
for [you] yourselves well know that the day of the Lord is coming in the [same] way as a thief in the night. 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
Whenever they say "Peace and security," then sudden destruction will overtake them like the birth pains of {a pregnant woman}, and they will not possibly escape. 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
But you, brothers, are not in the darkness, so that the day should catch you like a thief, 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.
for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
So then, we must not sleep like the rest, but must be on the alert and be self-controlled. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled.
For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.
But [because] we are of the day, we must be sober, [by] putting on the breastplate of faith and love and [as] a helmet the hope of salvation, 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
because God did not appoint us for wrath, but for the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live at the same time with him. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.
Therefore encourage one another and build up {each other}, just as indeed you are doing. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and rule over you in the Lord and admonish you, 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you.
and to esteem them beyond all measure in love, because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.
And we urge you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, console the discouraged, help the sick, be patient toward all [people]. 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
See to it that no one pays back evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue good toward one another and toward all [people]. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.
Rejoice always, 16 Be joyful always;
pray constantly, 17 pray continually;
give thanks in everything; for this [is] the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
Do not quench the Spirit. 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire;
Do not despise prophecies, 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt.
but examine all [things]; hold fast to [what is] good. 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good.
Abstain from every form of evil. 22 Avoid every kind of evil.
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete, blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The one who calls you [is] faithful, who also will do [this]. 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.
Brothers, pray for us. 25 Brothers, pray for us.
Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
I adjure you by the Lord, have this letter read aloud to all the brothers. 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with you. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
