Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you,
For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
When they say, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.
for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled.
for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.
But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.
Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
But we appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labor among you, and have charge of you in the Lord and admonish you; 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you.
esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.
And we urge you, beloved, to admonish the idlers, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with all of them. 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.
Rejoice always, 16 Be joyful always;
pray without ceasing, 17 pray continually;
give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
Do not quench the Spirit. 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire;
Do not despise the words of prophets, 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt.
but test everything; hold fast to what is good; 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good.
abstain from every form of evil. 22 Avoid every kind of evil.
May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this. 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.
Beloved, pray for us. 25 Brothers, pray for us.
Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss. 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
I solemnly command you by the Lord that this letter be read to all of them. 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
