Thessalonians 5 RHE/NIV - Online Parallel Bible

Douay-Rheims (RHE) New International Version (NIV)
But of the times and moments, brethren, you need not, that we should write to you: 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you,
For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord shall so come as a thief in the night. 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
For when they shall say: Peace and security; then shall sudden destruction come upon them, as the pains upon her that is with child, and they shall not escape. 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you as a thief. 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.
For all you are the children of light and children of the day: we are not of the night nor of darkness. 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
Therefore, let us not sleep, as others do: but let us watch, and be sober. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled.
For they that sleep, sleep in the night; and they that are drunk, are drunk in the night. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.
But let us, who are of the day, be sober, having on the breast plate of faith and charity and, for a helmet, the hope of salvation. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
For God hath not appointed us unto wrath: but unto the purchasing of salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Who died for us: that, whether we watch or sleep, we may live together with him. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.
For which cause comfort one another and edify one another, as you also do. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
And we beseech you, brethren, to know them who labour among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you; 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you.
That you esteem them more abundantly in charity, for their work’s sake. Have peace with them. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.
And we beseech you, brethren, rebuke the unquiet: comfort the feeble minded: support the weak: be patient towards all men. 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
See that none render evil for evil to any man: but ever follow that which is good towards each other and towards all men. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.
Always rejoice. 16 Be joyful always;
Pray without ceasing. 17 pray continually;
In all things give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you all. 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
Extinguish not the spirit. 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire;
Despise not prophecies. 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt.
But prove all things: hold fast that which is good. 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good.
From all appearance of evil refrain yourselves. 22 Avoid every kind of evil.
And may the God of peace himself sanctify you in all things: that your whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He is faithful who hath called you, who also will do it. 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.
Brethren, pray for us. 25 Brothers, pray for us.
Salute all the brethren with a holy kiss. 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren. 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
