The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
I, Paul, am an apostle on special assignment for Christ, our living hope. Under God our Savior's command, 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,
I'm writing this to you, Timothy, my son in the faith. All the best from our God and Christ be yours! 2 To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
On my way to the province of Macedonia, I advised you to stay in Ephesus. Well, I haven't changed my mind. Stay right there on top of things so that the teaching stays on track. 3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer
Apparently some people have been introducing fantasy stories and fanciful family trees that digress into silliness instead of pulling the people back into the center, deepening faith and obedience. 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God's work--which is by faith.
The whole point of what we're urging is simply love - love uncontaminated by self-interest and counterfeit faith, a life open to God. 5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
Those who fail to keep to this point soon wander off into cul-de-sacs of gossip. 6 Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk.
They set themselves up as experts on religious issues, but haven't the remotest idea of what they're holding forth with such imposing eloquence. 7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.
It's true that moral guidance and counsel need to be given, but the way you say it and to whom you say it are as important as what you say. 8 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly.
It's obvious, isn't it, that the law code isn't primarily for people who live responsibly, but for the irresponsible, who defy all authority, riding roughshod over God, life, 9 We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,
sex, truth, whatever! 10 for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers--and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine
They are contemptuous of this great Message I've been put in charge of by this great God. 11 that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.
I'm so grateful to Christ Jesus for making me adequate to do this work. He went out on a limb, you know, in trusting me with this ministry. 12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service.
The only credentials I brought to it were invective and witch hunts and arrogance. But I was treated mercifully because I didn't know what I was doing - didn't know Who I was doing it against! 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.
Grace mixed with faith and love poured over me and into me. And all because of Jesus. 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
Here's a word you can take to heart and depend on: Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. I'm proof - Public Sinner Number One - 15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst.
of someone who could never have made it apart from sheer mercy. And now he shows me off - evidence of his endless patience - to those who are right on the edge of trusting him forever. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.
Deep honor and bright glory to the King of All Time - One God, Immortal, Invisible, ever and always. Oh, yes! 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
I'm passing this work on to you, my son Timothy. The prophetic word that was directed to you prepared us for this. All those prayers are coming together now so you will do this well, fearless in your struggle, 18 Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight,
keeping a firm grip on your faith and on yourself. After all, this is a fight we're in. 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith.
Hymenaeus and Alexander are two of them. I let them wander off to Satan to be taught a lesson or two about not blaspheming. 20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.
