| 1 First, I tell you to pray for all people, asking God for what they need and being thankful to him. | 1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone-- |
| 2 Pray for rulers and for all who have authority so that we can have quiet and peaceful lives full of worship and respect for God. | 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. |
| 3 This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, | 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, |
| 4 who wants all people to be saved and to know the truth. | 4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. |
| 5 There is one God and one way human beings can reach God. That way is through Christ Jesus, who is himself human. | 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, |
| 6 He gave himself as a payment to free all people. He is proof that came at the right time. | 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men--the testimony given in its proper time. |
| 7 That is why I was chosen to tell the Good News and to be an apostle. (I am telling the truth; I am not lying.) I was chosen to teach those who are not Jews to believe and to know the truth. | 7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle--I am telling the truth, I am not lying--and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles. |
| 8 So, I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up their hands in a holy manner, without anger and arguments. | 8 I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing. |
| 9 Also, women should wear proper clothes that show respect and self-control, not using braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes. | 9 I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, |
| 10 Instead, they should do good deeds, which is right for women who say they worship God. | 10 but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. |
| 11 Let a woman learn by listening quietly and being ready to cooperate in everything. | 11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. |
| 12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to listen quietly, | 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. |
| 13 because Adam was formed first and then Eve. | 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. |
| 14 And Adam was not tricked, but the woman was tricked and became a sinner. | 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. |
| 15 But she will be saved through having children if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control. | 15 But women will be saved through childbearing--if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. |
