The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
The Spirit makes it clear that as time goes on, some are going to give up on the faith and chase after demonic illusions put forth by professional liars. 1 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
These liars have lied so well and for so long that they've lost their capacity for truth. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
They will tell you not to get married. They'll tell you not to eat this or that food - perfectly good food God created to be eaten heartily and with thanksgiving by Christians! 3 They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.
Everything God created is good, and to be received with thanks. Nothing is to be sneered at and thrown out. 4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
God's Word and our prayers make every item in creation holy. 5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
You've been raised on the Message of the faith and have followed sound teaching. Now pass on this counsel to the Christians there, and you'll be a good servant of Jesus. 6 If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.
Stay clear of silly stories that get dressed up as religion. Exercise daily in God - no spiritual flabbiness, please! 7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.
Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
You can count on this. Take it to heart. 9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance
This is why we've thrown ourselves into this venture so totally. We're banking on the living God, Savior of all men and women, especially believers. 10 (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe.
Get the word out. Teach all these things. 11 Command and teach these things.
And don't let anyone put you down because you're young. Teach believers with your life: by word, by demeanor, by love, by faith, by integrity. 12 Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.
Stay at your post reading Scripture, giving counsel, teaching. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.
And that special gift of ministry you were given when the leaders of the church laid hands on you and prayed - keep that dusted off and in use. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
Cultivate these things. Immerse yourself in them. The people will all see you mature right before their eyes! 15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.
Keep a firm grasp on both your character and your teaching. Don't be diverted. Just keep at it. Both you and those who hear you will experience salvation. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
