Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with every leader. 1 David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.
And David said to all the assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you, and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send abroad to our brethren who remain in all the land of Israel, and with them to the priests and Levites in the cities that have pasture lands, that they may come together to us. 2 He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our brothers throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come and join us.
Then let us bring again the ark of our God to us; for we neglected it in the days of Saul." 3 Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not inquire of it during the reign of Saul."
All the assembly agreed to do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people. 4 The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.
So David assembled all Israel from the Shihor of Egypt to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kir'iath-je'arim. 5 So David assembled all the Israelites, from the Shihor River in Egypt to Lebo Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim.
And David and all Israel went up to Ba'alah, that is, to Kir'iath-je'arim which belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the LORD who sits enthroned above the cherubim. 6 David and all the Israelites with him went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who is enthroned between the cherubim--the ark that is called by the Name.
And they carried the ark of God upon a new cart, from the house of Abin'adab, and Uzzah and Ahi'o were driving the cart. 7 They moved the ark of God from Abinadab's house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it.
And David and all Israel were making merry before God with all their might, with song and lyres and harps and tambourines and cymbals and trumpets. 8 David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals and trumpets.
And when they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah put out his hand to hold the ark, for the oxen stumbled. 9 When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled.
And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and he smote him because he put forth his hand to the ark; and he died there before God. 10 The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.
And David was angry because the LORD had broken forth upon Uzzah; and that place is called Pe'rez-uz'za to this day. 11 Then David was angry because the LORD's wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.
And David was afraid of God that day; and he said, "How can I bring the ark of God home to me?" 12 David was afraid of God that day and asked, "How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?"
So David did not take the ark home into the city of David, but took it aside to the house of O'bed-e'dom the Gittite. 13 He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.
And the ark of God remained with the household of O'bed-e'dom in his house three months; and the LORD blessed the household of O'bed-e'dom and all that he had. 14 The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the LORD blessed his household and everything he had.
